Escape from Tarkov is finally available on Steam as part of the 1.0 update, but players have run into a landmine in the form of Error Code 418, which is popping up for many.
Incidentally, Error Code 418 isn’t a new error, and it has existed previously in the Escape from Tarkov fandom. Getting this error code will feel quite depressing if you’re trying to play on the opening day.
Thankfully, there are some steps you can take to ease the problems we are encountering on opening day.
Escape from Tarkov Error Code 418 possible fixes
The Error Code 418 will pop up every time you can’t connect to the dedicated servers. This includes both PvP and PvE modes (requires separate DLCs). If you want to play Escape from Tarkov, connecting to the centralised servers is key. Having Error Code 418 pop up at your end will prevent you from doing so.
The recent reason behind the error code has to do with the opening day player count. It appears that the developers might have underestimated the number of players trying to enjoy Escape from Tarkov on day one. While the developers have confirmed the issue, there’s no ETA on when the server issues will cease to exist.

As of writing, the incidence of getting the error has reduced compared to a few hours earlier. However, if you’re still getting the error, here are some basic steps to complete.
- Retry, or completely restart the game from scratch. If you still get the error, repeat the process.
- Restart your router if the first technique doesn’t help.
- You can also check the integrity of your installed files. If a key file is missing by any chance, Steam will automatically redownload it, which should fix the problem.
Ideally, it’s best to wait before trying to play Escape from Tarkov. The update came out a few hours ago with a fresh wipe. It’s better to just wait before jumping in and continuing with your new character. Playing with the current server issues can be risky, as you might accidentally lose a lot of in-game progression.
